HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's basketball team shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor Sunday en-route to a 92-70 over the University of Hawai'i Hilo at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Reigning Pacific West Conference Player of the Week
Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) made 11-of-15 shots for a game-high 26 points in the win. He also grabbled six rebounds and had three assists.
The Silverswords were 36-of-60 in field goals to match their best shooting percentage since Feb. 6, 2016 against Notre Dame de Namur when they hit for an identical percentage. They improved to 13-7 overall and 11-4 in the PacWest and are sitting in third place in the conference standings.
Redshirt freshman guard
Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), who has several relatives on the Big Island, matched his career high with 18 points, making four field goals and all eight of his free throw attempts.
Kendall Small (Lakewood, Calif./Pacific/Mayfair HS) had 16 in the win while
Eliet Donley (Yokosuka, Japan/Hayfield, Va., HS) added 11 more.
UH Hilo fell to 9-9 overall and 7-8 in the PacWest.
Chaminade trailed just once in the game which came less than four minutes in at 10-8. A 3-pointer from
Bill Awet (Sydney, Australia/SIU Edwardsville/Victory Rock Prep, Fla., HS) on the 'Swords' next possession put them ahead to stay. A 19-4 run midway through the first half gave them a 13-point edge although the Vulcans rallied to make it a six-point game (35-29) with five minutes left in the half.
But a 14-1 run at the end of the half gave the Silverswords the cushion they needed to help them pull away. Eventually they built the lead to as many as 31 in the second half.
Chaminade shot a whopping 70 percent (21 of 30) in the first half and followed with a 50 percent second half. The 'Swords also outrebounded the Vulcans, 33-24, and outscored them from the bench, 37-18.
The Silverswords will embark on an important five-game road trip where they will face all four of the PacWest's leaders in the standings starting Saturday at No. 9 Azusa Pacific. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Pacific time.
