Men’s Basketball Falls at Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team on Thursday came away on the short end of a 78-60 decision to Holy Names University at Tobin Gymnasium.

The Silverswords, playing in the second of three consecutive days, fell to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the Pacific West Conference. They owned a 10-point lead midway through the second half but saw the Hawks outscore them, 35-7, the rest of the game including runs of 11-0 and 22-5 imbedded in the surge.

Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) led Chaminade with 13 points followed by Zach McIntire (Delaware, Ohio/Mercyhurst University/Delaware Hayes) with 12 and 10 from Paris Taylor (Bolivar, Tenn./University of Wisconsin Green Bay/Central HS). McIntire also pulled down nine rebounds, tying his career high.

Like Chaminade, the Hawks are also 3-6 and 1-2. Edward Gray had a team-high 21 points for HNU.

Chaminade owned small leads for a majority of the first half although Holy Names would be in front on the scoreboard twice in the final five minutes. There were also three ties during the span, the final being 31-all at halftime, thanks to a Tredyn Christensen (Eagle Mountain, Utah/Snow College/Westlake HS) layup with 91 seconds left.

Trailing 41-40 early in the second half, McIntire had six points during a 13-2 run, capped by Kevin Kremer's (Chico, Calif./University of Utah/Pleasant Valley HS) layup which gave Chaminade its largest lead of 53-43 with 12:43 remaining.

But the Hawks answered with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead. Kremer made one of two free throws to even the score at 54 but HNU made the game's decisive 22-5 surge over a nine-minute span. Chaminade went ice cold after taking its 10-point edge, making just two field goals the rest of the game.

The 'Swords made 24-of-60 shots for 38.3 percent while the Hawks shot 53.6 for the game, bolstered by a 64.3 second-half percentage. Chaminade managed to out-rebound Holy Names, 33-to-28, but was just 4-of-20 from 3-point range while HNU was 6-of-18.

It was just the second defeat to Holy Names in team history although Chaminade still owns a 15-2 lead all-time in the series.

The Silverswords will make the drive south to the Central Valley to face Fresno Pacific University on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Pacific time (2:30 p.m. in Hawai'i).
