HONOLULU – The unusual 2021 year has made finding opponents for the Chaminade University women's tennis team tough to come by.
After two matches against the University of Hawai'i Hilo on February 13, there was a lull. A lull of 44 days, to be precise.
On Tuesday, the Silverswords finally faced someone other than their own teammates for a change when they took on Portland State at Keehi Lagoon Park, their first "home" match of the year.
The 'Swords battled through the rustiness but fared well against their Division I counterparts with
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) providing stiff competition in singles. Liner dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision in No. 1 singles while Lau lost a tiebreaker in her first set to Makoto Ohara in the No. 2 spot before falling in the second set.
Marisa Luna (Kahului, Maui, Hawai'i/Maui) managed to take a second-set game in No. 4 singles while
Skye Haraga (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Punahou) won her match when her opponent retired due to an injury.
The Vikings (6-8) won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
The 'Swords (0-3) are next in action Saturday when they return to Keehi Lagoon Park to face UH Hilo. Doubles action will begin at 1 p.m.
