Men’s Soccer Downed by Hawai‘i Pacific

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team on Sunday suffered their second heartbreaking loss in as many games to in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University.

Two weeks after an overtime loss to the Sharks, a scrum in front of the Silverswords' net resulted in the game-winner in the 85th minute, a 2-1 HPU win at Saint Louis Field.

The Sharks improved to 3-0 on the year while the 'Swords fell to 0-3.

Tasman Turner (Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Iolani) got Chaminade in the scoring column first by heading in a corner kick from Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirstschaftgymnasium Westerburg) in the 15th minute. It was Turner's second straight game of finding the back of the net.

But HPU squared the game in the 67th minute off the foot of Leandro Weingartner then took the lead by Diego Saavedra in the closing minutes.

Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) got the start and played the first half then gave way to freshman Stig Sander (Bremen, Gernmany/Gymnasium un des Hamburgerstraube) who made his collegiate debut, playing all 45 minutes of the second half.

Roemer took two shots for the Silverswords while Jamin Fonseca (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and David Kurihara (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hanalani) attempted one each.

The 'Swords will close the short spring season Saturday against the University of Hawai'i Hilo.
