SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Chaminade University women's tennis team ended their season Thursday by dropping a 4-0 decision to Dominican University of California in the Pacific West Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
The Silverswords, seeded 12th, lost two doubles matches at the No. 3 and 2 positions, respectively, with
Skye Haraga (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Punahou) and
Emily Ramirez Miranda (Honolulu/Kaiser) falling 6-0 followed by the 'Swords' No. 2 team of
Salamasina Te`i and
Marisa Luna (Kahului, Maui, Hawai'i/Maui), 6-2.
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) were down 4-2 in No. 1 doubles when the Penguins captured the point.
No. 11 seed Dominican (2-11) then won singles at Nos. 6, 5 and 1, in succession, to win the match. Singles left unfinished were Lau at No. 2, Te'i at No. 3 and Luna at No. 4. Te'i was up by a set after defeating Kaitlyn Nguyen, 6-2, and the second was tied at 1 in the second when DUC won the clinching match.
Chaminade finishes the year 0-8. Haraga and Liner are the team's two seniors.
Haraga began her Chaminade athletic career in 2017 as a member of the women's basketball team where she played her freshman season.
Liner, who is also the president of Chaminade's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee), has been the 'Swords' top player and never played outside of the No. 1 spots in both singles and doubles since her freshman year in 2018. She departs with eight career wins including four singles victories in 2019 and a doubles upset of Dallas Baptist's regionally-ranked duo last year.
