Vulcans Spoil Women’s Soccer Home Opener

HONOLULU – Coming off a rather prosperous trip to Idaho, the Chaminade University women's soccer team was excited to return to their home pitch at Saint Louis Field for the first time this season.

However the University of Hawai'i Hilo made themselves at home Thursday with 3-0 win.

The Silverswords fell to 1-2 in the non-conference loss while the Vulcans improved to 3-2.

UH Hilo, which played all four of its spring matches at Saint Louis Field due to their new soccer field on the UH Hilo campus not being ready for use, got two goals from Daelenn Tokunaga while Piper Collado had two assists.

Both teams attempted 10 shots. The Vulcans had six of them on-goal while Chaminade had two SOGs, one each from Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Hawai'i/Pearl City HS) and Shayla Padilla (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Oral Roberts University/Leilehua HS).

Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made three saves in taking the loss. Viviana Poli made two stops to earn the win for UH Hilo.

After Tokunaga's first half goal put the Vulcans up, they got its second score from Silje Vigeland at the 56th minute. However UH Hilo stunned Chaminade with Tokunaga's second goal just 50 seconds later.

Following the Vulcans' third goal, the 'Swords tried to respond with a flurry of shots over a span of the next 14 minutes with Padilla taking two, Fontes one and another from Nicole Vontsolos (San Diego/Scripps Ranch). However UH Hilo put enough defensive pressure to prevent them from getting quality looks at the net. Chaminade's defense also clamped up, allowing no UH Hilo shots in the final 33 minutes.

Fontes took three of Chaminade's shots while two each came from Padilla and Asya Holt (Honolulu/Roosevelt).

The Silverswords will get the next nine days off before returning to action with a non-conference matchup against Hawai'i Pacific University on Sept. 25 at Saint Louis Field.
