HONOLULU –
Zach McIntire (Delaware, Ohio/Mercyhurst University/Delaware Hayes HS) and
Paris Taylor (Bolivar, Tenn./University of Wisconsin Green Bay/Central HS) tallied season-highs in the scoring ledger to help the Chaminade University men's basketball team pull out an 84-64 win Saturday over Dominican University of California at McCabe Gymnasium.
McIntire accounted for 19 points while Taylor hit his first eight shots from the floor to set a career-high with 17 coming off the bench as the Silverswords (6-8, 4-4 Pacific West Conference) set a season-best in scoring.
Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) added 15 for the home team who avenged last month's loss at Dominican in San Rafael, Calif., which snapped what was then a six-game win streak against them.
Raazhel Watkins (Concord, Calif./Sacramento State/College Park HS) added 11 points with
Tredyn Christensen (Eagle Mountain, Utah/Snow College/Westlake HS) providing nine points and a season-high six of the 'Swords' 17 assists on the afternoon, their second-highest this season.
The Penguins (5-10, 2-6 PacWest) were led by Adam Parker's 15 points.
Dominican led just once – 3-2 at the 18-minute, 19-second mark of the first half – before the 'Swords retook the lead just 52 seconds later on Amaral-Artharee's first of three 3-pointers of the day. From there, Chaminade managed to stay ahead with its lead hovering between six and nine points for much of the first half.
A layup from Taylor with 1:45 left in the half gave the 'Swords a 34-23 lead, a double-digit edge for the remainder of the game.
DUC got its deficit back to 10 early in the second half but 6-foot-11 center
Joseph Smoyer (Portland, Ore./Columbia University/Franklin HS) swished an uncontested triple from the top of the key, part of a mini-run that helped CUH build a 16-point lead.
Later,
Sawyer Storms (Idaho Falls, Idaho/College of Southern Idaho/Idaho Falls HS) and Amaral-Artharee hit consecutive 3s, which pushed the 'Swords' lead to 56-36 with 12:43 left. The Penguins never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Chaminade shot over 50 percent in both halves and finished with a 52.5 percentile (32-of-61), the team's highest percentage since making 55.9 in the season-opener against Alaska in November.
The 'Swords controlled the glass with a 37-to-31 edge and made 14 of their 25 trips to the foul line while Dominican made just 5 of 11 from the charity stripe. Smoyer blocked two shots, giving him a conference-leading 23 on the year and his eighth multi-block game of the year.
The Silverswords wrap up their six-game home stand (two of which were postponed with health and safety protocols) on Monday when they face Academy of Art at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
