Women’s Basketball Drops 88-73 Decision to Multnomah

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team posted their highest scoring game in three years but it wasn't enough as they fell to Multnomah University, 88-73, Wednesday at McCabe Gymnasium.

Olivia Crigler (Hebron, Ky./Pacific Union College/Holy Cross HS), Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) and Juliana Losalio-Watson (Ho'okena, Hawai'i/Konawaena) each posted scoring season highs in the loss.

Crigler went for 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers, with seven rebounds while Martinez hit for 15, making 5-of-7 shots from the floor. Losalio-Watson had 12, five boards and four assists.

Shaila Mays had a game-high 26 points, many of the pull-up jumper variety, to help the Lions improve to 2-0.

The 73 points is the most by Chaminade (0-4) since December 2019 when the Destiny Castro-led 'Swords had 75 at Academy of Art.

Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) pulled in a career-high eight rebounds while adding eight points on the scoreboard with Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) tying her career best with five assists. Martinez also dropped four dimes for the Silverswords, who amassed 19 assists, the most since January 2017 when the team had 21 against Holy Names.

The Silverswords led for the majority of the first quarter, leading by as many as 12 before settling into a 28-21 edge heading into the second. Chaminade shot 52.6 percent from the floor, making 10 of its 19 field goal tries.

But Multnomah would chop into the deficit where an 11-1 run towards the ending of the second quarter would result in a 50-44 lead for the Lions at halftime.

However, Chaminade went cold from the floor to start the third quarter, missing its first six shots from the field until Martinez knocked down a pull-up jumper with 3:18 left. But by that point, the Lions had already built their lead to 14. The 'Swords were able to twice cut their deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter but Multnomah was able to counter, getting shots to drop on its end down the stretch.

The 'Swords made season-highs of 24 field goals, six triples and a 38.1 field goal percentage. However, they committed 25 turnovers, which Multnomah was able to recycle to 32 points off takeaways.

Conversely, Chaminade was able to force 21 of its own and had 11 steals with Crigler, Losalio-Watson and Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy) each swiping three.

The Silverswords will get the next 13 days off before starting Pacific West Conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at The Shark Tank. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
