HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team ended the 2022 season Saturday, suffering a tough 2-1 loss to in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at Saint Louis Field.
Sebastian Pavez scored both goals for the Sharks including the game-winner in the 87th minute to give them a stunning victory.
Pavez got HPU's first goal in the 39th minute, receiving a pass into the Silverswords' zone, then lofting a 19-yard shot into the net.
Just four minutes into the second half, HPU was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a successful penalty kick goal for
Isaac O'Neill (Fernley, Nev./Grand Canyon/Fernley HS), his second goal of the season.
The match remained deadlocked at 1 and a draw seemed inevitable but with just over two minutes left, Leandro Weingartner crossed a pass into the 'Swords' box where Pavez was in the right place, heading the ball into the upper right corner for the game-winner.
HPU put up 12 shots on the afternoon to CUH's six. O'Neill was the 'Swords' lone multi-shot taker on the day.
Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) made one save for Chaminade while his Sharks counterpart, Jeremy Zielinski had two.
Following the match, the team honored its three seniors;
Dawson Christina (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro College/Grimsley HS),
Kekoa Kuloloia (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and
Reilly Minigutti (Brooklyn, N.Y./Richmond Int'l Academic and Soccer Academy/Dallas Jesuit HS). Christina, who returned after missing the previous six games due to injury, played 74 minutes while Kuloloia saw all 90 minutes of field time. Minigutti was unable to play due to a season-ending injury suffered in early October.
The Silverswords ended the season at 2-10-2 overall and 2-7-1 in the Pacific West Conference in
Joshua Woodard's first year as head coach. The Sharks ended at 8-6-2 and 6-4.
