Long Range Barrage Leads Men’s Hoops to OT Upset of Saint Martin’s

HONOLULU – The 3-point shot has been wildly inconsistent the last two years for the Chaminade University men's basketball team.

On Sunday, it was one of those days where the rim was as big as the Pacific Ocean.

The Silverswords buried 19 triples, the second-most in recorded history, while posting 23 points in overtime to help them upset 18th-ranked Saint Martin's University, 107-97, in the second day of the Hoops in Hawai'i Holiday Classic presented by Outrigger Resorts and Hotels.

Ross Reeves (Orem, Utah/Snow College/Orem HS) poured in a season-high 32 points, hitting seven 3s while Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) added 24 points, draining another six triples.

Chris Bready (Milwaukee, Wis./New Mexico Military Institute/Waukesha West HS) added to the 3-point barrage with another three treys as the 'Swords recorded the most 3s since hitting a school-record 20 against Northwest Indian College on New Year's Eve of 2016.

Raazhel Watkins (Concord, Calif./Sacramento State/College Park HS) contributed with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Jalen Brattain (Shallowater, Texas/Lubbock Christian Univ./Shallowater HS) added 11 points, eight boards and four assists.

Kyle Greeley led the Saints with 28 points, making 12 of 15 shots from the floor as they fell to 9-3 on the season.

Trailing early by a 7-4 count, the Silverswords went on a 17-2 blitz with Reeves accounting for six points and Amaral-Artharee with five more, putting them up 20-9. Their lead would swell to 36-23 after Brattain's layup with 5:40 left in the first half but the Saints outscored the 'Swords, 12-2, over the next two minutes, to cut the deficit to one possession.

Chaminade would build its lead again but a pull-up jumper by Nathaniel Stokes at the buzzer made it just a 44-40 lead for the 'Swords at halftime.

Saint Martin's momentum continued in the second half with five straight points as Greeley's layup gave them a 45-44 edge, its first lead in nearly 18 minutes. That's when the game got interesting.

Over the next six minutes, there were two ties and four lead changes with the biggest lead either team had was six by SMU at 64-58 with 11 minutes left. But Chaminade replied with a 10-0 run with Reeves getting eight along with a triple from Bready which gave them a 69-65 lead with 8:13 left.

The 'Swords lead grew to 76-66 two minutes later but Saint Martin's would force two ties. With 29 seconds left, Amaral-Arthraee drilled a corner triple putting Chaminade up 84-81 but on the ensuing possession, Christian Hafner sank the tying 3 with 12 seconds remaining to help send the game to overtime squared at 84.

On Chaminade's first two possessions of the extra period, Amaral-Artharee and Reeves sank 3-pointers, putting them up by six. After an SMU basket, Watkins hit a 3-pointer from the right wing, then came up with a steal and breakaway layup to put the 'Swords up 95-86. Chaminade sank all 10 free throws down the stretch to preserve the upset.

Chaminade made 53.6 percent of its shots (37-of-69) and were 14 of 18 from the charity stripe. They attempted 33 triples for a percentage of 57.6. The 'Swords pulled down 34 rebounds and dished out 23 assists.

Saint Martin's was just as efficient from the field, making 54.5 percent of its shots and was 14-of-33 from long range. The Saints had 29 rebounds, 14 assists with 13 turnovers.

The Silverswords will wrap the Hoops in Hawai'i Holiday Classic on Monday against Simon Fraser. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
