HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team was back in action Friday, facing UC Riverside, their second Division I foe in as many matches, at the Donald Andrews Diamond Head Tennis Center.
The Silverswords fell to the Highlanders, 4-0, to fall to 0-6 on the year while UC Riverside improved to 3-9.
The start of the match was delayed as rain, heavy at times, fell over the Waikiki area. After the courts were dry, play finally got underway at 3:45 p.m., a delay of two hours and 45 minutes.
Because time restraints and the threat of more inclement weather, both teams agreed to scrap doubles and played just singles with the victor being decided in a first-to-four decision.
Sydney Danielson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) and
Kylie Ye (Honolulu/Asia Pacific International School) dropped their matches in 6-0, 6-0 decisions.
Salamasina Robertson (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) had a competitive match against Hanh Pham before falling 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile in No. 1 singles,
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) gave UCR's top singles player, Mahli Silpachai, a run in the first set with a 6-3 score but lost the second, 6-1.
Marisa Luna (Kahului, Maui, Hawai'i/Maui) fended off Niki Shahbazi in No. 5 singles while
Skye Haraga (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Punahou) did the same against Sydney Tran at No. 6. Both matches were unfinished.
The Silverswords return to action Monday when they return to Division II competition and face Hawai'i Pacific University, the third-ranked team in the nation, at the Kailua Racquet Club. Doubles are expected to start at 1 p.m.
