Men’s Soccer Downed by HPU in First Game on O‘ahu

WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – Making their first appearance on O'ahu this season, the Chaminade University men's soccer team was hoping to turn their fortunes around after two tough outings in Idaho earlier this month.

However the Silverswords are continuing to try and find themselves Tuesday, dropping a 4-0 non-conference decision to in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University in a rare night game at Waipio Soccer Peninsula Stadium.

Playing under the lights on the island for just the second time ever, the Sharks scored three first-half goals to take early command.

Chaminade fell to 0-3 on the season while HPU improved to 2-2-2.

All three of HPU's first-half goals were scored in a span of 12-and-a-half minutes. Gerrit Arzberger scored the Sharks' first two goals during a three-minute stretch (29th and 32nd minutes). Makana Srivongsana had HPU's third goal just before the end of the half before adding his second goal in the waning moments of the game.

Ian Inigo (Houston/Bridgeland) took all three of Chaminade's shots, all on-goal, and Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) made three saves.

HPU took 13 shots while reserve goalkeeper Austin Matthews earned the win. Matthews replaced starter Jeremy Zielinski, who was injured in a collision with a Chaminade defender well outside the box in a scramble for a loose ball in the 19th minute.

The Silverswords return to action Friday as they face their other PacWest rival, the University of Hawai'i Hilo, in another non-conference contest on the Big Island and will feature the return of head coach Joshua Woodard to Hilo. Woodard played at UH Hilo and served as an assistant coach to the Vulcans' women's team for two seasons from 2017-18. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
