HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team on Saturday dropped a 75-48 decision to Point Loma at McCabe Gymnasium.
Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) had a game-high 19 points in defeat while
Paige Relph (Las Vegas/Waianae, Hawai'i) came off the bench to add a career-high 12 points for the Silverswords (1-13 overall, 1-7 Pacific West Conference).
Sasha Phillip (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Baptist) contributed with seven points with
Taeya Blakeney (Honolulu/Kaiser) pulling down a career-high six rebounds. Martinez dished out three assists for the home team.
Maddie Mersch led the Sea Lions (8-9, 6-3 PacWest) with 14 points.
The injury-ravaged Silverswords were held without a field goal in the game's first six minutes until a short jumper was made by Relph, putting the 'Swords' deficit at 19-4. The team found a bit more offensive success in the second quarter, posting 18 points with Relph accounting for eight of them.
Despite the slow opening quarter start, Chaminade managed to play evenly with Point Loma until the fourth quarter when the Sea Lions began pulling away, building its lead to 30 late in the game.
The Silverswords made 32.6 percent of its shots and, for the second straight game, attempted less than 10 3-pointers while showing aggressiveness to the basket, making 29 trips to the free throw line, making 17. They also pulled down 33 rebounds but suffered 28 turnovers.
The Sea Lions made 38.4 percent of their shots and 17 of its 23 free throw tries while being held to just 2-of-16 from long distance. Point Loma also had 48 rebounds and 14 assists.
The Silverswords will face Academy of Art on Tuesday at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
