Women’s Volleyball Wins Third Match in SoCal

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The 15th-ranked Chaminade University women's volleyball team continued their yearly tour of southern California with their third win in four matches.

On Wednesday, the Silverswords dispatched Biola University, 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, at Chase Gymnasium.

Greta Corti (Varese, Italy/Univ. of San Francisco/Alessandro Manzoni Liceo HS) put down a match-high 18 kills – the seventh straight match in which she led the squad – while team kills leader Ajack Malual (Rome, Italy/Tambosi ETI) added another 14 with five blocks and three service aces. The victory gave the 'Swords their third in four tries this season in the Pacific West Conference's toughest region.

Chaminade improved 25-3 on the year, just two wins away from matching the program record set in 2021. They are also 13-3 in the PacWest and remained 2 ½ matches out of first place after Point Loma swept Hawai'i Pacific University just minutes prior.

Lizanyela Lopez (Lima, Peru/Trinity Valley CC/Saco Oliveros HS) added 10 kills and five blocks. Mahala Ka'apuni (Hilo, Hawai'i/Alaska Anchorage/Hilo HS) chipped in with seven kills and Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany/Alaska/Schul- and Leistungsportszentrum Berlin HS) five more.

Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) had 43 assists and 10 digs while Nanna Inoue (Kula, Maui, Hawai'i/Tyler JC/King Kekaulike HS) had a season-high 14 digs and Hula Crisostomo (Honolulu/Univ. of Texas El Paso/Moanalua HS) with 13.

Juliana Van Ommering led Biola with 11 kills as the Eagles fell to 14-8 and 10-5 in the PacWest.

Chaminade stunned Biola by starting the match on a 14-2 run as the 'Swords posted four team blocks during the stretch which helped them to convincingly take the match lead.

The Eagles would dust themselves off in the second set, jumping out to a 15-12 lead before Chaminade ran off seven of the next eight points to go in front and an eventual two-sets-to-none advantage.

The 'Swords were on their way for a sweep, jumping out to a 16-11 advantage in the third set but the Eagles out-pointed them including a 6-0 run to send the match to a fourth set.

The Silverswords scored the first two points of the fourth frame, never trailing in the set as they closed the match out on Lopez's final kill of the night.

Chaminade had 57 kills and hit .225 while Biola had 42 kills with a .177 attack percentage. The 'Swords, the PacWest's top serving squad at over two per set but just 13 aces in their previous three matches, were dealing from the line again with nine aces. They also had 50 assists, 57 digs and 11 total team blocks.

Biola had just three aces with 38 assists, 53 digs and seven team blocks.

The Silverswords will wrap up the road trip Friday at Azusa Pacific with first serve at 3 p.m. Hawai'i time. The team then returns home for the final three regular season matches, all at McCabe Gymnasium.
