HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team wrapped up their 2022-23 season Wednesday with a 71-37 defeat to Fresno Pacific at McCabe Gymnasium.
Sasha Phillip (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Baptist) led the Silverswords with 10 points while also pulling down seven rebounds.
Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) ended her second season as a 'Sword with seven points and four assists while
Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy) added six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) and
Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) contributed with five points each.
Chaminade ended the season at 1-25 overall and 1-19 in the Pacific West Conference.
The Sunbirds were led by Breanna Hurt's 10 points. All 13 players scored in the game for Fresno Pacific which improved to 12-13 and 7-11 in the PacWest.
The first three scores were all beyond the arc with the 'Swords hitting two of them, one each from Martinez and Buttery, giving them a 6-3 lead. But FPU went on a 17-0 run over the next five minutes to take early 23-8 first quarter advantage.
Chaminade managed to right the ship in the second quarter, being outscored just 16-15. Phillip had accounted for six of the 'Swords' points with Martinez and Carter adding four each.
However the Sunbirds owned the second half, out-pointing Chaminade, 32-14, in the final 20 minutes of their season.
The 'Swords shot 30 percent from the floor, making 3-of-14 from 3-point land and 4-of-8 free throws. They pulled down 35 rebounds with nine assists and 17 turnovers.
FPU shot 34.2 percent, hitting 10 triples and 9-of-16 at the charity stripe. The Sunbirds recorded 51 rebounds with 11 assists and just five turnovers.
The Silverswords have no seniors and are expected to return the majority of their roster in 2023-24.
