Women’s Basketball Drops Road Finale in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's basketball team wrapped up their 13-day, five-game road trip Saturday with an 82-43 loss to Fresno Pacific in the first meeting of the two squads this season at the Special Events Center.
 
Olivia Crigler (Hebron, Ky./Pacific Union College/Holy Cross HS) dropped a game-high 15 points for the Silverswords. The junior hit a trio of 3-pointers, tying Samantha Saito's single-season record of 50 set during the 2008-09 season.
 
Mary-Lee Mitchell (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) came off the bench to add 14 points while Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) contributed with nine points.
 
Sasha Phillip (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Baptist) was Chaminade's top rebounder with six and Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) adding five more. Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) had a team-best three assists. Chaminade fell to 1-21 on the season and 1-16 in the Pacific West Conference.
 
Joleen Corona led the Sunbirds (9-12, 4-10 PacWest) with 14 points.
 
Chaminade missed its first nine shots before Crigler got their first basket on a 3-pointer. Mitchell's second triple of the season gave the 'Swords their first lead of the game at 8-7 before the Sunbirds went back ahead on a pair of free throws by Lydia Manu on the ensuing possession. FPU led, 15-11, at the end of the first quarter.
 
However, the 'Swords went without a point during an eight-minute stretch spanning the second and third quarters with Fresno Pacific scoring 16 straight to put the game out of reach.
 
Chaminade made 25 percent of its shots, hitting five triples and making 8-of-16 free throws with 33 rebounds and nine assists. The 'Swords were able to hold FPU to just 5-of-23 from 3-point range and forced 19 turnovers.
 
The Sunbirds converted on 43.9 percent of its shots but. They also benefited from 23 trips to the charity stripe, converting 19, and grabbed 43 rebounds.
 
The Silverswords return home for their final three games of the season which includes a rematch against Fresno Pacific. The 'Swords will open the home stand Wednesday against in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
