KAILUA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team on Wednesday closed out their 2023 season with a 7-0 defeat to Hawai'i Pacific University at the Kailua Racquet Club.
The Silverswords wrapped up the year 0-12 while the Sharks, ranked No. 19 in the new ITA rankings which were released earlier in the day, will sport a 10-7 mark heading into next week's Pacific West Conference Championships in Surprise, Arizona.
HPU won the required two doubles matches to earn the lone doubles point. They also captured all six singles matches to close out the match.
As was the case throughout the year, freshmen comprised the top singles squads with
Molly Cookman (Racine, Wis./Prairie) going up against Shaline Pipa, the No. 21-ranked player in Division II, in No. 1 singles while
Kirra Carvalho (Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kaua'i) faced fourth-ranked Elodie Busson at No. 2.
Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) faced Marleen Tilgner at No. 3 singles.
Cookman and Carvalho also faced off against Pipa and Tiglner in No. 1 doubles, with the latter being ranked as the No. 6 doubles team in Division II.
Emily Ramirez Miranda (Honolulu/Kaiser), the team's lone senior, ended her tennis career with a battle against Mihoki Miyahara in No. 6 singles.
