HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team scrapped through in a 1-0 win Friday over Academy of Art in a Pacific West Conference meeting at Saint Louis Field.
Bryana Yoshida (Makakilo, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Fresno Pacific University/Kapolei HS), playing in her first game of the season, provided the winning margin, breaking a scoreless contest with a goal in the 73rd minute.
The Silverswords improved to 3-2-2 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest while the Urban Knights fell to 0-6-1 and 0-2 in the conference. Chaminade's last four games have been decided by one score.
Yoshida's goal, the fifth of her career which included four at Fresno Pacific in 2022, was set up thanks to a pass from
Savannah Breeze Miranda (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea). Miranada threaded a ball between two ART U defenders to Yoshida who found herself one-on-one against goalkeeper Nicole Peoples, who abandoned the box. The graduate transfer skipped the shot past Peoples at the 10-yard line, with the ball crossing the plain of the goal line before an ART U defender could slide-kick it away.
The stifling 'Swords' defense was at its best, allowing just one shot in the match, which came in the 18th minute. They did not allow another Urban Knights look in the final 72 minutes.
Izabella Holly (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega) tallied her second straight clean sheet for Chaminade which won its second straight 1-0 decision.
The Silverswords attempted a whopping 22 shots, seven on-goal with Miranda taking a team-high six. Their plus-21 shot differential is the second-largest in program history and the most since outshooting the Urban Knights, 27-to-2, on Sept. 28, 2022.
Kenna Kiefer (Vail, Ariz./Cienega),
Madelynne Knowd (Ramona, Calif./Ramona),
Haley Mo'okini (San Gabriel, Calif./Gabrielino) and
Clara Slate-Liu (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Ecolè Alpha Secondary) each took two cracks at the ART U net.
The Silverswords are back in action Monday when they host PacWest newcomer Jessup University at Saint Louis Field at 12:30 p.m.
