Women’s Basketball Drops Series Finale to Nanooks

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team ended their two-game series against the University of Alaska Fairbanks Friday with an 82-66 loss at McCabe Gymnasium.

Freshman post Maddy Weaver (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) posted her first career double-double with a 17-point, 10-rebound effort. Fellow rookie Kali Jones (Hyrum, Utah/Mountain Crest) chipped in with 10 points and seven boards.

Morgan Escobedo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) added eight points, six rebounds and four steals while Sameera Elmasri (Shawnee, Kan./Birmingham-Southern Univ./Saint Thomas Aquinas HS) chipped in with six points, seven boards and three assists.

The Silverswords fell to 1-3 on the season.

Miranda Lomax had 14 for the Nanooks who improved to 5-1.

Although Chaminade pounded Alaska with a 52-to-33 effort on the glass, the Nanooks knocked down 13 3-pointers while the 'Swords did not hit a triple for the first time since February 2022, ending a streak of 55 straight with at least one.

The game was also slowed by 49 combined fouls and three players fouling out.

After grabbing a 12-7 lead in the first quarter, UAF went on a 17-6 run spanning the first and second quarters to take the lead for good.

Chaminae kept the deficit inside of 10 for most of the second quarter but Alaska would limit them to just two field goals in the third quarter to build as many as a 23-point lead.

The 'Swords shot 35.3 percent from the floor and made 18-of-26 free throws with 11 assists and 19 turnovers. The Nanooks shot 39.7 from the field, made 15 of their 23 shots from the charity stripe, dished out 20 assists to 12 giveaways.

The Silverswords will open their third two-game hoops series next Friday when they face Arizona Christian University at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
