Men’s Hoops Races Past Nobel in Final Non-Conference Game

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in their 110-66 win over visiting Nobel University in their final non-conference matchup of the season on Tuesday at McCabe Gymnasium.

Three Silverswords eclipsed the 20-point plateau and nine of 10 got into the scoring column to help them snap their two-game losing streak in improving to 6-2.

Jamir Thomas (Berkeley, Calif./City College of San Francisco/Berkeley HS) knocked down a career-high eight 3-pointers – two shy of the school record – for a game-high 25 points. Kris King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) pitched in with 22 points, making 8-of-10 from the floor, with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while Jackson Last (Hurricane, Utah/Robert Morris University/Hurricane HS) added 20 with four triples and six boards.

Roland Banks II (Bakersfield, Calif./Fullerton College/Cathedral HS) and Kent King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) chipped in with 10 each in helping the 'Swords eclipse the century scoring mark for the fourth time this season.

Fletcher MacDonald (Wollongong, Australia/Lubbock Christian Univ./Newington College HS) hauled in eight rebounds, along with nine points while Kameron Ng (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Univ. of Hawai'i Hilo/Saint Francis HS) dished out seven assists, one short of his career high.

Sparsh Kadayan had 12 points for Nobel, a National Collegiate Christian Athletic Association (NCCAA) program that does not have a national affiliation with the NCAA or NAIA. Chaminade was the fourth NCAA member the Knights faced this season (Pomona-Pitzer, CSUN and Fresno Pacific) but Tuesday's game was an exhibition for them to remain 1-8 on the year.

The game's first four minutes was all about scoring runs. The 'Swords scored the game's first 16 points with Kris King accounting for nine of them. But the feisty Knights responded with a 9-0 run before the 'Swords themselves had an answer with a flurry of triples, two from Thomas and another from Kris King to extend their lead to 25-11.

Chaminade used a 13-0 run late in the first half to grab a 43-17 lead and, eventually, a 49-28 edge at halftime.

Although the 'Swords outscored the Knights, 61-38, in the second half, both teams shot 50 percent or more from the floor with rebounds nearly even with the 'Swords' 22 and the Knights' 20. And in a rather interesting anomaly, Chaminade's starting five in the second half played 10 minutes and 38 seconds while their second unit all logged approximately 9:32 of playing time.

The 'Swords shot 52.1 percent from the floor, making 14-of-32 from 3-point territory and 20-of-30 free throws. They out-rebounded Nobel, 48-to-33, dished out 26 assists and forced 26 Knights' turnovers, although they gave the rock up 18 times themselves. Chaminade outscored the Knights, 28-9 in second chance points, 37-5 on the break and 39-15 off turnovers.

Nobel shot 43.1 percent from the field, making 3-of-12 from long range and 13-of-23 at the charity stripe with 18 assists.

The Silverswords jump back into Pacific West Conference action Saturday when they host in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
