Women’s Basketball Drops Second Game of Road Trip

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's basketball team on Thursday got 13 points each from Sameera Elmasri (Shawnee, Kan./Birmingham-Southern Univ./Saint Thomas Aquinas HS) and Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) but it wasn't enough as the Silverswords fell in the second game of their northern California trip in a 70-59 decision to Dominican University of California at the Conlon Center.
 
Elmasri snagged nine rebounds while Parado tied her career high with eight while Kali Jones (Hyrum, Utah/Mountain Crest) hauled in a season-high 13 more with nine points. Morgan Escobedo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) added nine points, seven boards and three assists on the evening.
 
The loss dropped the 'Swords to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the Pacific West Conference.
 
The Penguins were paced by15 points each from Abigail Cooper and Taylor Linzie in improving to 7-8 and picking up their first conference win of the season, improving to 1-3.
 
Chaminade led after three quarters but were outscored, 22-10, in the fourth quarter.
 
Trailing throughout the game, the 'Swords trailed by as many as 10 in the third before mounting a comeback. Escobedo's 3-pointer at the 5:05 mark of the quarter ended a 10-2 run which gave CUH a 42-42 lead with 5:05 left in the frame, its first lead since late in the first quarter.
 
An Elmasri layup followed by a three-point play from Maddy Weaver (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) gave Chaminade its largest lead at 54-48 just over a minute into the final quarter. However, the 'Swords went without a bucket in the final four minutes while DUC used a 14-2 run to retake and expand their lead in the waning minutes.
 
The 'Swords made 33.8 percent of its shots, made five triples and was 10-of-19 at the charity stripe. They did manage to slightly outrebound the Penguins, 47-to-46, but committed 16 turnovers to Dominican's nine.
 
The Silverswords will conclude their road trip Saturday at Academy of Art with tipoff at 11 a.m. Hawai'i time, then will disperse for the Christmas break.
