Baseball Drops Two in Baseball Bash Finale

HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University baseball team ended their weekend by dropping both of their Saturday games at the Big Island Baseball Bash at Francis Wong Stadium.

The Silverswords scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning against Saint Martin's but fell a run short in their 5-4 loss.

Chaminade dropped its second game of the day to Hawai'i Pacific University, 5-1, in a non-conference meeting.

The Silverswords are 2-6 on the season.

Game 1: SMU 5, CUH 4
After allowing the Saints to plate five runs in the top of the fourth, the 'Swords got a run back in the sixth when Saint Martin's balked in a run, allowing Casey Kudell (Irvine, Calif./Irvine Valley College/Irvine HS) to plate Chaminade's first run.

The 'Swords put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Andrew Karns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) drew a one-out balk to make it, 5-2. Cato Kleinman (Westlake Village, Calif./Monterey Peninsula College/Westlake HS) grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out but drove in JT Navyac (Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Cal State Fullerton/Saint Louis HS) for their third run of the game.

Joe DuCoeur (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Lake City) then followed with a ground-rule double to left, making it 5-4 while also advancing the tying run to third. But the Silverswords couldn't get the equalizing score to cross.

Max Patterson (Honolulu/Olympic College/Kalani HS) took the loss with Colin Driscoll getting the win for the Saints (2-5) and Bryson Nakamoto the save.

Game 2: HPU 5, CUH 1
The Sharks scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth but the 'Swords got it back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Aydan Lobetos (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama), one of his two hits in the game.

HPU would take the lead for good with a two-run sixth then got two more in the seventh and the eventual 5-1 win.

Jake Harper (San Pedro, Calif./El Camino College/San Pedro HS) had three hits for Chaminade. Brayden Wells (Pullman, Wash./Lower Columbia CC/Pullman HS) tossed five innings with six strikeouts while Matthew Orozco (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) took the loss.

Jordan Otien tossed seven innings to earn the win for HPU (6-1), avenging its first loss of the year on Friday.

Chaminade will return home for a single game on Tuesday in a rematch against Saint Martin's at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
