SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's basketball team on Saturday opened their final mainland trip of the season, dropping an 87-71 decision to Westmont College in their first-ever game at Murchison Gym.
Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) led the Silverswords with 16 points and four assists while
Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) added 12 points.
Sameera Elmasri (Shawnee, Kan./Birmingham-Southern Univ./Saint Thomas Aquinas HS),
Morgan Escobedo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle),
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) and
Amaya Washington (Peoria, Ariz./Dream City Christian) each had six points for the 'Swords, who fell to 3-20 and 1-17 in the Pacific West Conference. Every Silversword who played scored at least one point.
Bailey Fong led the Warriors (11-13, 7-9 PacWest) with 19 points.
Westmont led the entire game although the 'Swords were able to chop double-digit deficits to single digits at several points including with 2:27 left in the third quarter when they whittled a 15-point deficit down to five (57-52) on a Martinez layup. An 8-0 Warriors run spanning the third and fourth quarters gave them a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.
Chaminade shot 42.1 percent from the floor, made seven 3-pointers and was 16-of-22 from the free throw line. Westmont shot 41.9 and made 11 triples while outrebounding the 'Swords by a 50-to-30 count.
Both teams did not do a particular good job of ball security with 40 combined turnovers, 19 by the Warriors.
The Silverswords will be in Fresno on Monday to face Fresno Pacific. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. Hawai'i time.
