Baseball Drops Pair in Classic Finale

WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i –Chaminade University completed the first weekend of its resurrected baseball program on Sunday, dropping the final two O'ahu Baseball Classic contests to California Collegiate Athletic Association members Cal State East Bay and Cal State Los Angeles at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Baseball Complex.

The Silverswords surrendered three runs in eighth, which broke a 5-5 tie in their 8-5 defeat to East Bay then saw Cal State LA put up a big number in the sixth in their 11-2 loss.

Chaminade is 1-3 on the season.

Game 1: CSUEB 8, CUH 5
Trailing 2-0 after the visiting half of the first, JT Navyac (Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Cal State Fullerton/Saint Louis HS) got a run in the bottom of the first. Derek Augenstein (Vista, Calif./Palomar College/Rancho Buena Vista HS) tied it on an RBI single followed by Jackson Dorn's (Happy Valley, Ore./Mt. Hood CC/Clackamas HS) sacrifice fly which put the 'Swords up, 3-2.

The Pioneers evened it up with a Matthew O'Mahony solo shot in the fourth but took a 5-4 edge on Cato Kleinman's (Westlake Village, Calif./Monterey Peninsula College/Westlake HS) RBI groundout. O'Mahony put CSUEB ahead in the sixth with his second homer of the game, a two run shot.

In the seventh, Jake Harper (San Pedro, Calif./El Camino College/San Pedro HS) hit a one-out triple into the right-center gap then scored the tying run on an error.

However, the Pioneers scored three times in the top of the eighth to help them get the win over CUH for the second time in the tournament.

O'Mahony's two homers and three RBI made him the hitting star of the game while for Chaminade, Augenstein and Evon Williams (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) each had two hits.

Caleb Schaeffer got the win for the Pioneers while Drake Richardson earned the two-inning save. Augenstein was tagged with the loss.

Game 2: CSULA 11, CUH 2
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Harper got on with a one-out single then made it to second when the Golden Eagles' shortstop made a catch of a fly ball in shallow right field and the subsequent throw to get him at first was thrown away. Harper tied it on Kleinman's single to center.

But in the top of the sixth, Cal State LA got the go-ahead run without the benefit of a hit with three walks and a hit batter. That was followed by six hits, all singles. In all, eight runs came in as the Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate.

Kleinman and Harper had two of Chaminade's six hits in the final game of the Classic. Brayden Wells (Pullman, Wash./Lower Columbia CC/Pullman HS) took the loss while Jorge Romero picked up the win for Cal State LA.

The Silverswords will travel to the Big Island this weekend to participate in the Big Island Baseball Bash hosted by the University of Hawai'i Hilo. The 'Swords will face Hawai'i Pacific University and UH Hilo on Friday in non-conference action and Saint Martin's from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference on Saturday.
