Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime in Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i – On Tuesday, the Chaminade University women's basketball team was a 30-foot heave away from going into overtime against the University of Hawai'i Hilo.

In the rematch just four days later, the Silverswords and Vulcans did go into an extra session. The outcome, however, was the same.

Playing in their first overtime game in nearly seven years, Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) got her first double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs, in Chaminade's 73-67 defeat to the Vulcans at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Morgan Escobedo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) added 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists and played all 45 minutes.

Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) chipped in with 12 points and Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) got her first career double-digit scoring game with 11 and hauled in six boards.

The Silverswords, whose last contest in OT was on Feb. 4, 2023, fell to 3-17 and 1-14 in the Pacific West Conference.

Keirstyn Agonias had 18 for UH Hilo (8-11, 5-8 PacWest).

Chaminade, which trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, did not lead until Martintez's basket put them ahead, 56-55, with just 1:23 remaining. . Escobedo, whose basket on Tuesday seemingly sent that game in, made another clutch bucket to give the 'Swords a two-point lead with nine seconds left.

But the Vulcans converted on two free throws with three seconds left to force overtime where UH Hilo built a five-point lead early and hung on in the waning seconds.

Chaminade hit on just under 35 percent for the game with six 3-pointers and were 15-of-18 from the charity stripe with 43 rebounds.

UH Hilo was a shade under 36 percent from the floor with six triples and 45 rebounds but also struggled from the free throw line, missing 12 of its 33 attempts.

The Silverswords return to McCabe Gymnasium on Tuesday in their penultimate home game of the season when they face Concordia University Irvine. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
