WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team on Wednesday wrapped up their non-conference slate against in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Silverswords ended up on the short end of a 2-1 decision to the Sharks.
Chaminade fell to 0-3 on the season while HPU got its first win to improve to 1-4. Since the matchup was a non-conference tilt, the result has no bearing on the PacWest standings or in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.
The 'Swords got their lone goal in the 88th minute when
Ian Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./Cuyamaca College/Meter Dei HS) got a tap-in from five yard out after a crossing pass from
Owen Malone (Carlsbad, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Carlsbad HS). The score came despite playing the final 31 minutes short-handed after a CUH red card.
HPU got its first score on a penalty kick in the 36th minute then an insurance goal in the 73rd minute from Ethan Farrar, which ultimately proved to be the game-winning goal.
Garcia attempted three of the 'Swords' five total shots while the Sharks took nine kicks at the net.
Kala'i Duncan (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) and
Nick Lopez (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) were the other two shot-takers for Chaminade.
Kili Chappell (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Stanislaus State/Baldwin HS) took the loss as the 'Swords fell to 1-5 all-time in Waipio Stadium in what is widely considered to be the best soccer venue in the state. HPU's Kevin Harr earned the win.
The Silverswords open PacWest action next Tuesday, opening a four-game home stand against Dominican University of California. Kickoff at Saint Louis Field is set for 10 a.m.
