WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's soccer team ended the non-conference portion of their schedule Wednesday with a 1-0 defeat to crosstown rival Hawai'i Pacific University at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The game's lone goal was scored in the 77th minute off a direct kick just outside the box by Mehana Ortiz after the Silverswords were assessed a foul.
The 'Swords fell to 1-2-2 on the season but since the contest was designated a non-conference tilt, it does not count towards the Pacific West Conference standings nor towards the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge. Chaminade was also seeking its first-ever win at Waipio Stadium, falling to 0-4-2 all-time in what is considered to be the best soccer facility in the state. All four of their defeats in the stadium have been 1-0 finals.
The Sharks, who played just their second regular-season contest after a plethora of September exhibitions, is 1-1.
A defensive tug-of-war throughout the 90 minutes, both teams attempted just five shots each.
Kenna Kiefer (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) took a CUH-high two shots with single attempts made by
Gracie Knowd (Ramona, Calif./New Mexico State/Ramona HS),
Madelynne Knowd (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) and
Haley Mo'okini (San Gabriel, Calif./Gabrielino).
For the second straight game, Chaminade used both goalkeepers with
Izabella Holly (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega) getting the first-half nod while
Jordhan Kieres (Lakewood, Ohio/Bellermine Univ./Lakewood HS) played the second half.
Madi DePhillips picked up the win for HPU.
The Silverswords open PacWest action Tuesday when they host Dominican University of California. Kickoff at Saint Louis Field is at 12:30 p.m.
