Women’s Basketball Falls to Dominican in Return Home

HONOLULU – Back home after a lengthy road trip, the Chaminade University women's basketball team could not get their offense on track Thursday, suffering a 64-43 defeat to Dominican University of California.

After heavy rains throughout the morning which rendered the McCabe Gymnasium floor unplayable, the game was moved to The Shark Tank, home of Hawai'i Pacific University.

Morgan Escobedo (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) and Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy) had seven points for the Silverswords with the former adding nine rebounds and four steals.

Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) and Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) had six points each for Chaminade, which fell to 6-15, 5-10 in the Pacific West Conference. Despite the loss, the 'Swords are still well within contention for a conference tournament berth, sitting just 1 ½ games out behind Fresno Pacific for the sixth and final spot.

Abigail Cooper had 16 for the Penguins, who improved to 14-9 and 8-4 in the conference.

Chaminade could not recover from offensive lulls in the second and third quarters, getting a combined 14 points on five made buckets during those 20 minutes.

The 'Swords hit 28.6 percent of their shots with three 3-pointers but did manage to out-rebound DUC 42-to-39.

The Penguins shot at a 35.9 percent clip with five triples and had 15 assists.

The Silverswords return to action Saturday when they host Academy of Art at McCabe Gym with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
