Volleyball’s Win Streak to HPU Ends in Five

HONOLULU – The rivalry between the Chaminade University and Hawai'i Pacific University women's volleyball teams dates back to 1984, spanning well over 100 matches.

Although the Sharks have a significant lead in the all-time series, 75-to-45, the Silverswords have dominated as of late with 11 straight wins dating back to the spring 2021 non-championship season, their longest streak of the series.

In Wednesday's 121st all-time meeting, the injury-riddled 'Swords, who are down three outside hitters, rallied from a two-set deficit but ran out of gas to suffer the five-set loss to the Sharks, 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8 at the HPU Shark Tank.

Redshirt freshman Audrah Johnson (Nampa, Idaho/Utah State University/Nampa HS) set season-highs with 19 kills and 12 digs for the Silverswords, who fell to 11-10. The good news for Chaminade was the match was designated non-conference, keeping their Pacific West Conference record at 5-1. However, the match does count towards the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge standings. The rematch will be on Tuesday, Oct. 28 on the 'Swords' home court and will count towards the conference standings.

Maylynn Mitchell (Corona, Calif./Orange Lutheran), just four days removed from her 26-kill effort against Vanguard, added 12 kills as the 'Swords dropped their third straight after enjoying an eight-match winning streak. Alizaysha Sopi (Waianae, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Tennessee State University/Kapolei HS) contributed with 11 kills while Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) put down 10 more and hit .714 in the match. The latter also had seven total blocks.

Allexis Iramina (Honolulu/Moanalua) had her fourth consecutive double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs with Lilinoe Paschoal (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Baldwin) dishing out 23 more helpers.

Sophia Cooper had 15 kills for HPU, its first win over Chaminade since April 2021, while endinh its eight-match losing streak to improve to 5-15.

The Silverswords struggled in the opening set, hitting just .162 to the Sharks' .323, which resulted in the home team taking the first-set lead.

After HPU won the second set to take a 2-0 edge, the 'Swords managed to fight back in the third set, leading by as many as seven as their .360 attack percentage and a 5-0 block advantage forced the match to continue.

The fourth set was nothing short of dramatic. HPU opened up a 19-15 lead and were poised to take the match before the 'Swords went on a 6-1 run, paced by two kills each from Johnson and Sopi. Tied at 23, Chaminade tallied the final two points to send the match into a decisive fifth set.

However, the Sharks' early 8-2 run in the finale followed by another at 3-0 gave the match to the home team.

The Silverswords managed more kills (65-60), assists (61-57) and digs (57-54) but two of their statistical staples – service aces and blocks – which normally signifies a win, contributed to their undoing. The 'Swords had just four aces and eight total team blocks while the Sharks amassed 14.5 blocks. They also committed a season-high 16 service errors.

The Silverswords return home to McCabe Gymnasium to face their other interisland rival, University of Hawai'i Hilo, in a non-conference match on Friday at 6 p.m. The match will still count towards the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge standings.
