Men’s Soccer Celebrates Seniors with Big Win

HONOLULU – The 2025 home slate ended for the Chaminade University men's soccer team with a resounding bang.

The Silverswords, who had their scoring struggles this season, found the back of the net four times then hung on in the final minutes to send out their 10 seniors with a 4-3 win over Westmont College at Saint Louis Field.

The victory snapped their 19-match winless streak dating back to last season while their four goals is tied for the third most in program history. The 'Swords also won on Aloha Senior Day for the first time since 2019.

Three seniors – Owen Caba (West Linn, Ore./West Linn), Owen Malone (Carlsbad, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Carlsbad HS) and Kayden Medeiros (Pukalani, Maui, Hawai'i/Western Oregon Univ./Kamehameha-Maui HS) – deposited a ball in the Warriors' net in their final game at their home pitch.

Another senior, goalkeeper Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS), notched seven saves to earn the win.

The 'Swords improved to 1-8-1 and 1-5-1 in the Pacific West Conference while the Warriors dropped to 5-7-2 and are also 1-5-1 in the conference.

Six other seniors, Kala'i Duncan (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama), Oliver Horgan (Reno, Nev./Cal Poly Humboldt/Galena HS), Minas Karagiorgis (Larnaca, Cyprus/Queens College/Saint George HS), Remo Merlo (Reno, Nev./Remo), Michael Oelberger (Los Angeles/Butler University/Cathedral HS) and Hunter Santoscoy (Florence, S.C./Union University/West Florence HS), were also celebrated.

After Westmont notched the first goal of the game, Malone got the tying goal in the 42nd minute, off a Medeiros feed. Nineteen minutes later, Medeiros was on the kicking end of a score, firing the go-ahead goal.

Just six minutes later, Vlad Tomutiu (Belmont, Calif./Cañada College/Carlmont HS) got his first score of the year, putting CUH up, 3-1. Not to be outdone, a Westmont handball in its own box led to Caba's penalty kick goal in the 69th minute, his seventh career goal, tying him for sixth in program history.

Westmont made things very uneasy for Chaminade with two unanswered goals including one with a minute left. However, the 'Swords managed to play keep away as time wound down.

The 'Swords fired up 14 shots while the Warriors had 18. Aidan Strickler took the loss for the visitors.

The Silverswords will end their 2025 season with three straight road games including two in Northern California, starting Thursday at Menlo College.
