Men’s Soccer Drops Home Decision to Sharks

HONOLULU – Playing at their home pitch of Saint Louis Field for the first time since their Aug. 31 exhibition against Whitworth University, the Chaminade University men's soccer team battled tough before falling in a 4-0 decision to in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University.

The Silverswords, who held the Sharks to a single goal in the first non-conference meeting on Sept. 16 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, trailed 1-0 at halftime and were seemingly poised to send the rematch into another dramatic finish.

Instead, HPU had a flurry of second-half goals to thwart the 'Swords by a 4-0 count in a match that counts towards both the Pacific West Conference standings and PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.

Caleb Yap-Texeira (Pukalani, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) had two of Chaminade's four shots at the net. Mason Heu (Makawao, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and Vlad Tomutiu (Belmont, Calif./Cañada College/Carlmont HS) had the other two.

Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) recorded three saves in facing 13 HPU (5-1-2, 2-1 PacWest) shots.

Chaminade (0-5, 0-3 PacWest) is back at Saint Louis Field on Thursday with a meeting against Azusa Pacific. Kickoff follows the women's match with a projected 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
