Men’s Basketball Sails Past Vikings

HONOLULU – In their final game before embarking on their biennial trip to Maui, the Chaminade University men's basketball team hit triple digits for the second time in three regular season games, rolling past Western Washington University, 107-98, at McCabe Gymnasium.

Five Silverswords hit double-digits in the scoring column, paced by Kris King's (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) team-high 22 points to help them improve to 2-1 on the season, all against competition from members from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).

Kent King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) and Roland Banks II (Bakersfield, Calif./Fullerton College/Cathedral HS) each had 18. Kent King pulled down eight rebounds while Banks dished out a career-high nine assists, eight coming in the first half.

Nathan Medina (Long Beach, Calif./Biola University/Valley Christian HS) chipped in with 16 points with Fletcher MacDonald (Wollongong, Australia/Lubbock Christian Univ./Newington College HS) adding 14.

The Vikings (3-3) had two players with 20 points in Trevor White (25) and Louis Grante-Halliday (20).

The 'Swords led from start to finish, scoring the game's first five points, a lead that at one point swelled to as many as 17, en-route to a 60-piece in the first half.

The high-scoring nature of the game was epitomized midway through the second half when neither team missed a field goal during a two-minute span, both going 4-for-4 from the field.

Chaminade built its lead to as many as 23 before Western Washington chipped away and came within 95-84 with 5:40 left. However, MacDonald and the King twins each hit buckets to expand the 'Swords' lead back to 16 to maintain a double-digit lead until the final horn.

CUH shot over 50 percent in both halves, resulting in a 54.8 overall percentage and was 20-of-29 at the free throw line. They pulled down 36 boards, dished out 18 assists and forced 19 Western Washington turnovers, to which they converted to 23 points.

WWU was 47.9 percent from the floor, made 6-of-29 from 3-point range and was 24-of-33 at the charity stripe. The Vikings had 43 rebounds and 16 assists.

The Silverswords will now look forward to their return to the Valley Island when they face Washington State in the Southwest Maui Invitational on Monday, their first trip to the Lahaina Civic Center since 2019. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
