LAHAINA, Maui, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's basketball team wrapped up their first trip to the Lahaina Civic Center in six years on Wednesday by dropping a 102-76 decision to Boise State in the seventh-place game of the Southwest Maui Invitational.
Twin brothers
Kent King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) and
Kris King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) along with
Roland Banks II (Bakersfield, Calif./Fullerton College/Cathedral HS) each had 11 points for the Silverswords, who fell to 2-4 on the year in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Brandon Haddock (Southlake, Texas/University of Utah/Carroll HS) added 10 points, hitting three 3-pointers as each Silversword who saw court time knocked down at least one field goal.
Both King twins and
Fletcher MacDonald (Wollongong, Australia/Lubbock Christian Univ./Newington College HS) had three rebounds each as Chaminade was out-rebounded, 50-to-20.
Nathan Medina (Long Beach, Calif./Biola University/Valley Christian HS), who established himself as a Maui shooting hero by the fans, was held to just six points but dished out four assists.
Drew Fielder had 27 points and 14 rebounds for Boise State (5-3) who avoided losing to a Pacific West Conference opponent for the second time this season. The Broncos lost to Hawai'i Pacific University in their Nov. 3 season opener.
Early 3-pointers from Banks and
Kris King put the 'Swords up, 8-7. The Broncos would expand their lead to as many as 39-26 in the later stages of the first half but MacDonald and Banks had four points each in their 13-2 run that brought them to within 41-39 with under a minute remaining. A pair of BSU free throws gave them a 43-39 halftime lead.
Chaminade stayed within five points early in the second half but went cold, going without a made basket during a five-minute span as Boise State went on an 18-1 run. Haddock's first 3-pointer of the game would end the run but the 'Swords could not get closer than 17 the rest of the game.
The last two minutes saw second-year guard
Jett Lehmann (Minden, Nev./Douglas), who played his first game against Texas on Tuesday, make his first career field goal while
Payton Lambrecht (Milwaukee, Wis./Sauk Valley CC/Whitefish HS) hit two shots including a 3-ball.
Chaminade was 40.9 percent from the floor, hitting 11 triples and was 11-of-17 from the free throw line. They dished out 14 assists and forced 14 turnovers, although the Broncos had only four in the final 20 minutes. The 'Swords had just six turnovers themselves and out-pointed BSU, 18-8, off turnovers.
Boise State shot 60.9 percent from the field with seven 3-pointers and was 17-of-25 at the charity stripe. They had 21 assists and four blocks.
With the 2025 rendition of the Southwest Maui Invitational now in the books (USC defeated Arizona State in the championship game), Chaminade will return to the Valley Island in the 2027 tournament.
With the non-conference slate complete, the Silverswords will turn their attention to the opening of PacWest action on Tuesday when they travel to the Shark Tank and face in-city rival HPU. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. and will be televised on statewide television on Spectrum Sports.
