Volleyball Deals Aces Against Dominican

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team wrapped up their first Pacific West Conference weekend home stand Sunday with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-23 win over Dominican University of California at McCabe Gymnasium.

The Silverswords dealt 13 service aces against the Penguins, tied for the fifth-most in a three-set match in program history, and the fifth-highest in the PacWest this season.

Tabby Allen (Leander, Texas/Rouse) had five of the aces – one shy of the career high she set last year – and also put down 13 kills to help the 'Swords improve to 10-8 and even their conference mark at 4-4. They also won their 15th straight against Dominican, their longest active winning streak against a single opponent.

Lillie Hinton (Spicewood, Texas/Lake Travis) also put down 13 successful attacks, hitting .455 on the afternoon, with three aces and a pair of blocks. Allison Panter (Denver, Colo./Portland State University/Denver School of Science and Technology HS) added six kills with Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) and Beele Wieczorek (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School) getting four each with the former getting two blocks.

Lilinoe Paschoal (Paukukalo, Maui, Hawai'i/Baldwin) dished out 18 assists with Panter dealing nine and Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) adding eight along with 17 digs, her second highest in a sweep this season.

Alexis Schwartz and Kalaya Phung had six kills each for Dominican (4-12, 1-7 PacWest).

The 'Swords jumped out to as many as a 10-point first-set lead before the Penguins staved off five set-points to close within three. Allen's kill finally closed out the frame.

After Dominican scored the first five points of the second set, the Silverswords went nuclear, going on a 19-1 surge. Hinton put down six kills during the run while CUH forced four attack errors to help them convincingly take a two-set lead.

The 'Swords used a new lineup with three different starters in the third set and Dominican took advantage, hanging with the home team and held a 20-18 edge before Chaminade evened the set at 21. An Allen kill put the 'Swords up 22-21, Krueger's lone ace of the match followed by a block from Mykelle Brainard (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge) and Anna Karasinska (Nowa Ruda, Poland/Il Licem Ogolnoksztalcase IM) set up aloha ball.

The Penguins managed to shake off two match points before Allen's final kill put the match away.

Chaminade hit .268 with 44 kills, 42 assists, 46 digs and five total team blocks. Dominican had 24 kills with a .135 percentage, 22 assists, five aces, 30 digs and four blocks.

The match was also significant with the first usage of the Challenge Review System (CRS) at McCabe Gym (the system was in place in last Thursday's match against Jessup but no challenges were requested). The teams were a combined 0-for-4 in challenges.

The Silverswords continue their home stand Thursday with a meeting against 25th-ranked Biola at McCabe Gym. The Eagles swept the 'Swords in the first meeting in La Mirada on Sept. 22. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
