UH Hilo was paced by Chase Koepke and Sajal Glunz, who had 14 kills each. The Vulcans improved to 20-8 and 12-5 in the PacWest, and can clinch the fourth and final spot in next week's PacWest Championship tournament in Costa Mesa, California, with either a win at Hawai'i Pacific or a Westmont (11-6) loss at nationally ranked Point Loma on Saturday, the final day of the regular season. They also swept a non-COVID season series from Chaminade for the first time since 2015.
The win also gave UH Hilo two points in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge to guarantee first-place points in volleyball.
The 14-2 'Swords run, led by Allen's six kills, built as many as a 19-9 margin to help them win the first set.
Chaminade held a 21-18 lead in the second and threatened to go up by two sets before a 6-1 run helped the Vulcans rally. Late in the set, Bauer played the front row for the first time ever as did fellow backrow player
Cheyenne Canche (San Antonio, Texas/Harlan). With Bauer and Canche, joined by Wieczorek, playing at the net, the 'Swords managed to force a 24-all deadlock before the Vulcans pulled it out to tie the match.
UH Hilo rolled off the first eight points of the third set before Chaminade rallied back to close within 14-12. The Vulcans used a 7-0 run late to take a 2-1 lead.
