WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University baseball team wrapped up their series against Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday with 4-2 and 9-3 defeats at Hans L'Orange Field.
The Silverswords had leads in both games before the Golden Eagles (4-1) would rally in the middle innings to complete the three-game series sweep.
Brayden Braga (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) logged three total hits on Sunday for the Silverswords (0-3).
Game 1: CSULA 4, CUH 2
The afternoon got off to a promising start with
Cameron Breeze's (Temecula, Calif./San Diego City College/Paloma Valley HS) RBI knock followed by a wild pitch that allowed
Bode Poler (Montesano, Wash./Gonzaga University/Montesano HS) to scamper home for the 'Swords' second run.
Starter
Ryan Kepple (Dana Point, Calif./Saddleback College/Capistrano Valley Christian HS) was solid in his major college debut, allowing just one run through four innings. However, the Golden Eagles got the tying run in the seventh and the go-ahead run an inning later.
The 'Swords had a big opportunity in the top of the eighth, drawing three walks to load the bases with one out. However, a double play ended the inning to put out the potential rally.
Kepple went four innings, allowing the single run.
Brennen Panis (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) went the next four in taking the loss.
Aydan Lobetos (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) and
Taylor Ayala (Bountiful, Utah/Salt Lake CC/Woods Cross HS) each drew two of the team's seven walks.
Jared Robles earned the win in relief for Cal State LA.
Game 2: CSULA 9, CUH 3
A Chaminade error put the Golden Eagles on the board in the second but the Silverswords received the gift back with an error in the bottom of the frame plated
Andrew Karns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene). The 'Swords took a 2-1 lead in the next inning on Poler's RBI single.
But CSULA responded in the four with a lead-changing two-run single. A solo homer in the sixth made it 4-2 before Braga got Chaminade to within a run with an RBI knock in the sixth.
The Golden Eagles posted a five-spot in the seventh and final inning, the big blow a grand slam.
Chris Cody (Orange, Calif./Irvine Valley College/El Modena HS) went five solid innings with three strikeouts but was tagged with the loss.
Jacob Badillo picked up the win while Chris Lozano, who entered in the sixth with a one-run lead, went the final two innings to earn the save.
The Silverswords are back at Hans L'Orange for the start of their final non-conference series of the season against Saint Martin's on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
