IRVINE, Calif. – The Chaminade University softball team concluded the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Sunday with an 8-0 defeat to No. 17 Cal State East Bay at Great Park.
The Silverswords were held to just two hits – a
Summer Buck (Honolulu/Kaiser) first-inning double and a
Taneia Simanu (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) single in the fifth inning.
Isabel Rodriguez (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) drew a pair of walks with
Sunni Kahanu (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Hawai'i/Mililani HS) being the 'Swords' other baserunner with a bases on balls in the top of the first inning.
Facing their third NFCA nationally ranked opponent in the tournament, Chaminade held their own before the Pioneers plated two runs in the bottom of the third on back-to-back doubles.
The wheels came off in the fourth when the 'Swords committed a pair of errors which led to six runs.
CUH threatened to end the run rule with Rodriguez's second walk and Simanu's single to lead off the fifth. However, CSU East Bay got the next three batters out to finish the game.
Bailey Benson (Cheney, Wash./Gonzaga Preparatory) took the loss although four runs she allowed were unearned.
Marissa Quintero got the win for East Bay which finished the tournament at 4-1.
The Silverswords (0-5) will remain in Southern California for a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills at Toro Diamond. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. Hawai'i time.
