Baseball Drops Pair at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO – The Chaminade University baseball team on Wednesday opened their second four-game series in Southern California by dropping their doubleheader to Point Loma, 8-0 and 12-4, at Carroll B. Land Stadium.

The Silverswords fell to 3-8 and 1-5 in the Pacific West Conference. The Sea Lions, ranked 21st in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Poll and 12th in the National Baseball Collegiate Writers Association (NBCWA) Media Poll, improved to 10-3 and 6-0 in the PacWest.

Game 1: PLNU 8, CUH 0
Alex Hamada (Aliso Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) had two of the 'Swords' four hits on the afternoon including a double in their second at-bat of the game. The freshman second baseman also singled in the sixth.

Trysten Mooney (Helena, Mont./Wenatchee Valley College/Capital HS) led off the third with a single with Aydan Lobetos (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) getting an infield in the fourth.

Chris Cody (Orange, Calif./Irvine Valley College/El Modena HS) scattered seven hits in his 5 2/3 innings of work in taking the loss.

Jake Schwartz drove in three for Point Loma while Derek Silva got the win and Matt Elliott the save.

Game 2: PLNU 12, CUH 4
The bats came alive for Chaminade in the second inning when the first seven batters reached base. Caleb Wagner (Menifee, Calif./Mesa) drove in two followed by Mooney's RBI infield single. Chris Mata (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/South Mountain CC/Maui HS) made it 4-0 on an RBI knock to center. Unfortunately for CUH, the hits didn't return after that.

The Sea Lions took the lead in the fifth on a three-run homer by former Hawai'i Hilo Vulcan Mason Cook, part of a four-run frame then added on in the sixth.

Chaminade had four total hits in the regularly-scheduled seven-inning nightcap. Anthony O'Canas (Woodland, Calif./American River College/Woodland HS) lasted 4 1/3 frames while Kyle Seo (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento City College/Inderkum HS) surrendered his first runs of the season in being charged with the loss.

Vaughn Neckar went five innings to earn the win with Matt Bernath getting three RBI.

The series wraps up with a nine- and seven-inning doubleheader on Thursday. Because of the threat of rain later in the afternoon, first pitch was moved up to 7 a.m. Hawai'i time.
