Baseball Drops Series Opener at Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Chaminade University baseball team opened their final road trip of the season Friday with a 10-4 defeat to Vanguard University at Dean Harvey Field.

Cameron Breeze (Temecula, Calif./San Diego City College/Paloma Valley HS) belted out three of the Silverswords' seven hits on the afternoon while Bode Poler (Montesano, Wash./Gonzaga University/Montesano HS) had two more. Both 'Swords had two RBI.

Chaminade got off to a quick start in the first inning with Breeze's RBI triple. Two batters later, Poler doubled in Taylor Ayala (Bountiful, Utah/Salt Lake CC/Woods Cross HS) and Breeze, giving the 'Swords a 3-0 lead before the Lions had an at-bat.

However, it took Vanguard just one swing to overtake Chaminade, thanks to a grand slam by Colton Perez in the bottom of the first.

After the Lions tacked on two more in the second, Breeze's third inning run-scoring single to bring in Trysten Mooney (Helena, Mont./Wenatchee Valley College/Capital HS) helped CUH close to 6-4.

But VU plated four runs in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Tyler Geivet (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) was the first of three relievers out of the bullpen and helped keep the Lions off the board with three scoreless innings, although three of the four runs he allowed in the sixth inning were unearned. Fisher Migita (Honolulu/Mid-Pacific Institute) and Jet Uszacki (Calgary, Alberta/Mt. Hood CC/Joane Cardinal-Schubert HS) combined for the final three scoreless frames. Kyle Seo (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento City College/Inderkum HS) was charged with the loss.

Seth Wrightstone earned the win in relief with the support of 11 Vanguard base hits.

Chaminade fell to 7-30 and 5-26 in the Pacific West Conference while Vanguard is 10-25 and 7-22.

The series continues Saturday with a seven-inning doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. Hawai'i time.
