Baseball Drops Series Finale to HPU

WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University baseball team concluded their four-game season series against in-city foe Hawai'i Pacific University by a 19-1 loss that ended in the seventh inning via the run-rule at Hans L'Orange Field.

Trysten Mooney (Helena, Mont./Wenatchee Valley College/Capital HS) drove in the Silverswords' lone run of the evening as the 'Swords fell to 10-35 overall and 8-31 in the Pacific West Conference.

Tyler Arnold homered three times and had eight RBI – both Chaminade opponent records – to help HPU improve to 25-19 and 23-15 in the conference in its final home game of the year. The Sharks took all four contests from the 'Swords in a unique series that was stretched out over the length of 30 days between the first and last meetings.

Chaminade was held to just four hits on the evening. Chris Mata (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/South Mountain CC/Maui HS) led off the game with a single, extending his current hitting streak to eight straight.

With the Silverswords trailing 2-0, Caleb Kim (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Christian Academy), getting the start at designated hitter, led off the third inning with a double and eventually scored on Mooney's RBI single, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

But it was all Sharks from there, plating 15 runs between the fourth and fifth innings.

Brayden Braga (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) got the 'Swords third hit of the game with a pinch-hit single in the sixth while Aydan Lobetos (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) singled through the hole between third base and shortstop in his only at-bat of the game in the top of the seventh.

Ryan Kepple (Dana Point, Calif./Saddleback College/Capistrano Valley Christian HS), making just his fourth start of the season and the first of five CUH hurlers, was charged with the loss, allowing two runs in 2 2/3 frames.

Jacob Vanek earned the win for HPU.

The Silverswords will end the season this weekend with a four-game series against their other in-state rival University of Hawai'i Hilo at the University of Hawai'i Manoa's Les Murakami Stadium. The series begins on Saturday with first pitch at 2 p.m.
