Tomutiu Scores Twice in Men’s Soccer Mainland Opener

LACEY, Wash. – The Chaminade University men's soccer team opened their first mainland non-conference trip in four years by dropping a 4-2 decision to Saint Martin's University at Saint Field.

Vlad Tomutiu (Belmont, Calif./Cañada College/Carlmont HS) scored both goals for the Silverswords, who are making their first non-conference mainland trip since 2022 and first-ever visit to the state of Washington.

Tomutiu scored the game's first goal just one minute and 50 seconds into the game, the fourth-fastest in program history, via an assist from Oliver Horgan (Reno, Nev./Cal Poly Humboldt/Galena HS). He tacked on a penalty kick goal in the 71st minute, becoming the first Silversword to record a multi-goal game since Kelton Cheney in 2021. Horgan's assist was also his first career point.

Tomutiu and Santiago Fernandez (Orlando, Fla./Westminster College (PA)/Freedom HS) each had three shots for the 'Swords, who attempted 14 shots, seven on-goal. Both of Tomutiu's shots on-goal crossed the plane of the goal line.

Joshua Cox (San Diego/Iona University/Canyon Crest HS) and Chance Therrien (Charlotte, Vt./University of St. Thomas/Champlain Valley Union HS) also took multiple tries at the net.

Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) made three saves for the 'Swords.

After Tomutiu's opening goal, Saint Martin's scored four unanswered goals, two from Grant Deuel.  Connor Leistiko made five saves for the Saints.

The Silverswords wrap their Pacific Northwest trip Saturday at Western Oregon University, the program's first-ever appearance in the state.
