Head coach Michael Edwards

Michael Edwards

The 2024-25 season is the third for Michael Edwards as Chaminade University women's basketball head coach.

In his third season, the Silverswords had six victories, one short of the program record set in 2014-15 and 2018-19. The team also won five Pacific West Conference games, the third-most since the start of the program in 2006-07. In addition to beating in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University for the second straight year, they also posted wins against Westmont and Biola, both of whom would later earn berths into the PacWest Tournament. Their victory at Concordia on Jan. 20 was also their first road win in the rough-and-tumble Southern California region since February 2019.

Edwards' second year saw the 'Swords post four wins, the most by the program since 2019-20 while the team's scoring average increased to 61.6, the fourth-highest in single-season team history. The year was highlighted by a 77-66 win over Hawai'i Pacific on Jan. 18, their first victory over their in-city rival in nearly 16 years and snapping a 40-game skid in the series. The team was also one of the top academic programs in NCAA Division II, ranking seventh in the WBCA Academic Top 25 with a 3.794 team GPA.

In Edwards' first season, the 'Swords set a single-season team record with 1,013 total rebounds, marking the first time in program history the team surpassed the millennium mark in boards while the team's 39.0 per game average was the second-highest ever. They also held opponents to a shooting percentage of 40.0, the second-lowest ever. Junior guard Olivia Crigler set a program record with 57 3-pointers, which broke Samantha Saito's record of 50 which stood for 14 years. Fellow guard Dallas Martinez also made history, registering the program's first-ever triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists against Champion Christian on Jan. 2, 2023.

Edwards spent the previous two years (2020-22) at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson, Arizona, where he was the girls’ varsity associate head coach. In both years there, he helped the Caballeros reach two 5A state championship games while compiling an overall record of 44-6.

Prior to his time at Flowing Wells, Edwards was the girls varsity head coach at Tanque Verde High School in Tucson, where he compiled a 109-40 mark during his five-year coaching tenure and was the region coach of the year three times. The Hawks qualified for the state playoffs all five years with four regional runner-up titles and one regional championship. He also coached several high school and club teams in Lubbock, Texas, before moving to Tucson.

An Army veteran, Edwards is no stranger to Hawai‘i. Prior to an honorable discharge from the military in 2008, he spent four years stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield as a Chief Warrant Officer and Chinook helicopter instructor pilot.

Edwards is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Teaching and Education, while also having both a MBA and Juris Doctor degrees from Texas Tech University.
