Ty Aki

Ty Aki is in his 11th year as the women's tennis head coach for Chaminade University, having been hired on June 2, 2014.

In 2021, he coached the Silverswords to their appearance in the Pacific West Conference Championships berth in Surprise, Ariz., the program's first appearance in the tournament since 2012.

In the first year under his guidance, the Silverswords defeated College of Idaho 5-4 on March 24, 2015, which snapped a two-year, 24-match losing streak. His teachings also helped junior Kimberly Takara to Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors on March 17, the first for a 'Sword since at least 2003.

His teams have also done the work in the classroom. Since taking over as head coach, 27 players have been honored as Academic All-PacWest while the team has been honored nationally with the ITA All-Academic Team awards every year since 2017.

Aki, who owns the Hawai‘i Tennis Academy in Honolulu, has nearly 30 years of athletics and coaching experience in the sport and is the head coach at Pac-Five for both boys and girls tennis programs. He guided Kalei Gora of Saint Francis School to three straight Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association girls singles titles from 2004-06 and as well as Island Pacific Academy’s Matt Westmoreland to a runner-up finish in the HHSAA Boys Championship in 2007. (Under HHSAA rules, Pac-Five, a conglomeration of smaller private high schools on O‘ahu, cannot compete for team championships, but individuals are allowed to play under the school they attend).

Previously, he was the director of the Hickam Tennis Center on the Hickam Air Force Base and oversaw the center’s junior and adult programs.

Aki holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Hawai‘i-West O‘ahu campus and received his Master’s in Educational Technology from UH-Manoa.
