Shelby Young is in her second year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Chaminade University women's volleyball team.
Shelby has been in the coaching ranks since the end of her playing days in 2014. She got her first taste of coaching while she was still in college, serving as head coach of the Sierra Gold Volleyball Club 14s-1 Girls during a six-month span from late-2011 to mid-2012. She then became an assistant coach for the freshmen girls team at her alma mater, Whitney High School in Rocklin, California, during the 2012 season. The following year, she became the boys head coach at Roseville High School in Roseville, California.
Shelby attended Hofstra Univeristy in Hempstead, New York, following high school and made an immediate impact as a freshman. She played 17 matches with 13 starts for the Pride and finished fourth in kills per set at 1.77 and fifth in points at 1.99 per set.
She transferred to American River College in Sacramento, California, for her sophomore campaign and was named team captain. Shelby was a starter in the non-conference season but suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament prior to the start of Big 8 Conference play. After being granted a medical redshirt and having her sophomore year reinstated, she tore her ACL for a second time prior to the start of the 2012 season. However, she remained at American River as a volunteer assistant and earned her Associate of Arts degree in Social Sciences in May 2013.
Shelby then transferred to Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, for her junior season on both academic and athletic scholarships. However, midway through her senior season in 2014, she suffered her third ACL tear which spelled the end of her collegiate career. She would later earn her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Southern Oregon in June 2015.
In addition to coaching various teams, she also assisted in various camps and clinics at both American River and Southern Oregon and also did private one-on-one coaching.
A San Jose, California native, Shelby moved to O'ahu in November 2015 with her family when her father, Howard, landed the job of Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hagedone Printing.
