Kent Yamaguchi is in his 20th season at the helm and 22nd overall with the Silversword softball program, making him the longest tenured coach in the Chaminade athletics department. With 240 career wins as head coach heading into the 2025 season, Yamaguchi is the winningest coach in program history. He began his collegiate career at Chaminade for the 2004 season as the infield coach before being elevated to the head coaching position in 2006.
In 2023 and after years of waiting, the program finally got their own field -- Silversword Field at Sand Island Park. Their new home paid dividends, turning the Silverswords into an offensive juggernaut by leading the Pacific West Conference and setting a school record with 24 triples while their 0.52 per game average ranked fifth in NCAA Division II. The new home field advantage led to a 22-24 record and a 14-17 conference, both win totals being the most since 2013, with the 'Swords being in the thick of a PacWest Tournament berth until the final day of the regular season. The successful year led to a record-six All-PacWest selections at the end of the season including junior catcher Keaolani Takemura, who led the nation in triples per game at 0.24 to earn first team honors, the program's first conference first-team honoree since 2013.
The following season, the 'Swords again enjoyed the fruits of their home by posting 11 wins at Silversword Field. The 'Swords clobbered four homers that left the 225-foot fencing, three smacked by Larchelle Tuifao, the first out-of-the-park dingers in the brief history of the field. The team also saw success away from home, winning three games in the always-daunting PacWest's Southern California region. Their March 27 win at No. 17 Concordia University Irvine not only snapped a streak of 48 straight defeats in the SoCal dating back to 1992, but it was also the program's first-ever road win against a nationally ranked foe. The road trip also saw the 'Swords earn victories at Biola and Azusa Pacific. And while Chaminade continued to slug, their pitching staff was also exceptionally well with a 2.86 ERA, the lowest in a non-COVID-shortened season since 2002.
The success of the 2024 season saw junior shortstop Taryn Fujioka earn the PacWest Player of the Year honor, the first Chaminade softball player to earn the conference's top honor. Takemura was also voted to her second straight first team all-conference honor at catcher while Jaeda Kumaewa-Cabunoc earned another all-conference award, becoming the first Silversword to earn three All-PacWest distinctions.
During the 2022 season, the Silverswords posted 16 wins. Six games into the PacWest season, the team was 6-2 and held the conference's second place spot in the standings. The pitching staff of Kumaewa-Cabunoc, Taylor Genera and Charlize De Jesus posted a team ERA of 3.16, the seventh-lowest in school history while the 'Swords' defense turned 25 double plays, leading the nation in the category for a majority of the season.
During the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened 2021 season, the Silverswords finished 12-12 with the season limited to playing their in-state rivals, the University of Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific University. The season was highlighted by taking 8-of-12 games from HPU, marking the first-ever season-series win against the Sharks in the 34-year history of the program. They also took 3-of-4 at UH Hilo, the team's first-ever four-game road series win against the Vulcans. The 'Swords posted a 2.97 team ERA, the sixth-lowest in school history. The success saw sophomore pitcher Taylor Genera and freshman outfielder Haley Hayakawa take All-West Region honors while junior second baseman Cheyne Obara was tabbed as the Pacific West Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
In 2013, Yamaguchi saw his greatest success as head coach, guiding the 'Swords to a 25-21 record, the program's first winning season since 2002. The win total was one shy of the school record, set that same season. Among the memorable highlights from 2013 was the Silverswords' second-ever appearance in the Gold (championship) Bracket in the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., and a 17-game stretch midway through the season in which the Swords lost only one game. That 16-1 run also gave Yamaguchi his 100th career win on March 30 at Holy Names. The on-field success saw a record four Silverswords honored on the All-Pacific West Conference softball teams and the 10 1/2 game turnaround also made them the nation's 16th most-improved Division II squad that season.
Yamaguchi is also proud of the academic success of his squad with 174 Academic All-PacWest honorees and 45 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes during his head coaching tenure. Since 2015-16, 49 have been recognized on the prestigious Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) Academic Achievement Awards which requires a cumulative 3.50 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale and two years of college level studies.
The 'Swords have also have been regionally recognized individually in the classroom with second baseman Kristiann Endow (2014), third baseman/catcher Coco Stewart (2015,'16), designated player/pitcher Amber Manuel (2016) and Takemura being honored as College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic District 8 selections, encompassing the entire West Region. Manuel became the first Chaminade softball player to achieve CSC Academic All-America status when she was voted as a member of the third team in 2016 while Takemura was voted to the third team in 2023.
Yamaguchi has a long history with the sport of softball. He guided Hawai'i ASA Kaneohe to three state championships during his tenure as head coach from 1993 through '97. He was a Na Wahine assistant and defensive coach from 1998 to 2003. He was also a high school assistant coach at Castle (1995-99) and University (2000-03). Yamaguchi also coached football at his high school alma mater, Damien Memorial School ('75), where he was a position coach and defensive coordinator (1987-92).
Yamaguchi and his wife, Vanessa, have four daughters. Aloha graduated from the University of the Pacific in 2003, while Kealoha was a catcher on the University of Hawai`i softball team. Two of his daughters have Chaminade roots. Kehaulani, who was the team's psychology and assistant pitching coach from 2016-18, played second base and outfield for the Silverswords while his youngest daughter, Iwalani, who played shortstop at CUH for four years, earned her degree at Chaminade in the spring of 2009.
A graduate of Kapiolani Community College in the University of Hawai'i system, Yamaguchi worked full time at United Airlines since 1978 where was a station trainer coordinator. He left United in 2021 and joined Hawaiian Airlines in 2022.
