Honolulu, HI- The Nanooks took set one and two, the Swords took set three, but Alaska rebounded and took a hard fought fourth set for a 3-1 victory (20-25, 20-25, 25-14, 23-25) over Chaminade tonight in McCabe Gym.
Freshman Kylee Pedro (Honolulu, HI/Mid Pacific) just missed a double-double for Chaminade, collecting 9 kills to go along with 11 digs. Freshman Whitney Vivieros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) added 9 kills and 8 digs for the Swords.
The decisive fourth set was a back and forth affair, with the Swords taking an early 7-3 advantage on a kill by Whitney Vivieros. Alaska responded and tied the set at 10-10 on a kill by Jessica Hill. The set continued to stay close as the Swords tied the Nanooks at 19-19 and 22-22 before falling 23-25.
Junior setter Tanya Alvino (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) had 31 assists for CUH.
Alaska out-dug the Swords 52-49. The Nanooks won the hitting battle, .163 to .123.
Alaska was led by Megan Thigpen with 13 kills. Alexa Sherman led the Nanooks with 40 assists.
With the loss, Chaminade moves to 1-7. Alaska improves to 4-4. The Swords are back in action on September 12th against Alaska Anchorage. First serve is set for 2 PM HT in McCabe Gym. boxscore.htm
