CUH WSOC: Swords Close, But Not Quite, in 1-0 Loss at Hilo

Makua stops six shots for CUH

HILO, HI- The Swords faced the Vulcans of UH-Hilo this afternoon in a physical affair on UHH Soccer Field and lost by a score of 1-0.

The Swords, looking to win the rubber match this season with Hilo (1-1 series prior to today) saw the Vulcans Brianna Lopiccolo score in the 12th minute on a breakaway to take a 1-0 lead.  The score stayed 1-0 at the half as back and forth action continued to the break.   UH-Hilo won the first half shot count, 7-3.

The second half started with a chance from Chaminade's Alyssa Nagai (Waipio, HI/Pearl City) that forced a Hilo save.  Sophomore Amber Bonifacio (Ewa Beach, HI/Moanalua) created another chance later in the half, but could not convert.  Bonifacio led CUH with two shots on the match.  The Pac West Conference match ended in a 1-0 Vulcan victory.

Coach Ula Rowe commented after the match: “It was a very physical game on a wet field.  We created a few great chances.  We just didn't finish them.”

Freshman Kainoa Makua (Kailua, HI/Kalaheo) stopped 6 shots for CUH.  The Swords were out-shot 12-6 on the match.

With the loss, the Swords move to 1-14, 1-9 in conference.  UH-Hilo improves 3-10-2, 2-7.  Chaminade is back in action on October 29th at Hawaii Pacific.  Match time is set for 12:30 PM HT.
