CUH WSOC: Swords Lose Season Finale at BYU-Hawaii 7-1

Williams tallies goal in last match for CUH

LAIE, HI- The Swords took on BYU-Hawaii today and the fourth-place Seasiders defeated Chaminade by a score of 7-1.

BYU-Hawaii, coming off a recent defeat, came out ready to go against the Swords, but Chaminade answered the Seasiders effort in the opening minutes.  In fact, the Swords grabbed a 1-0 lead off a goal in the 21st minute by senior Whitney Williams (Pukalani, HI/St. Anthony's).  Sophomore Kristy Iwahashi (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) was credited with the assist.

The Seasiders responded with a goal by Britt Edman in the 24th minute to tie the score at 1-1.  BYU-Hawaii tallied another goal in the 39th minute before Edman added her second of three goals on the afternoon in the 39th minute.  A fourth Seasider goal made it 4-1 at the half.  BYU-Hawaii won the first half shot count 18-3 and took a three-goal lead into halftime.

BYU-Hawaii tallied two more goals in the 53rd and 56th minutes before a late goal (87th minute) made the final 7-1.

Chaminade sophomore Amber Bonifacio (Ewa Beach, HI/Moanalua) led CUH with two shots on the match.

Coach Ula Rowe stated after the match: “BYU-Hawaii was hungry and it was their senior day. Regardless of that, we scored first and getting a go-ahead goal against a great team like BYU-Hawaii isn't easy.  It continues to show our improvement this year.  But stopping a team like BYU-Hawaii for ninety minutes is hard to do and we couldn't contain them for the full ninety.”

Freshman Kainoa Makua (Kailua, HI/Kalaheo) stopped 4 shots for CUH.  The Swords were out-shot 30-5 on the match.

With the loss, the Swords finish the year at 1-16, 1-11 in conference.  BYU-Hawaii concludes the regular season at 12-3-1, 8-3-1.
