HONOLULU, HI- The Swords faced a nationally ranked team tonight in the #13 Falcons of Seattle Pacific and despite a concerted effort, fell in three sets: 18-25, 17-25 and 15-25.
The first set was close; as CUH was within a point at 15-16 after a
Poerava Gantt (Kapaa, HI/Kapaa) kill for the Swords. SPU pulled away and won the set 25-18. The second set followed a similar pattern, as a kill by Chaminade senior
Malilimago Toailoa (Waikaloa, HI/ Kealakehe) put the Swords within a point at 16-17 before the Falcons pulled away to win the set 25-17.
Seattle Pacific won the final set by their largest margin 25-15 to earn the victory. The Falcons had a hitting percentage of .298 to .054 for CUH.
Senior
Poerava Gantt (Kapaa, HI/Kapaa) contributed 10 kills and
Kristina Donathan (Honolulu, HI/ St. Andrew's Priory) led the offense with 13 assists along with 14 digs. Junior
Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) had 5 kills in defeat for Chaminade.
The Swords lost the dig battle 44-35.
Coach Brown commented, “We wanted the team to focus on emotion, energy and they brought that tonight. We played as best we could against a ranked team and the lesson learned will help us in the Pac West Conference.”
SPU was led by Cailin Fellows with 12 kills.
The Swords fall to 1-2 with the loss. Chaminade is back in action on September 2nd in McCabe Gym. CUH will face Northwest Nazarene at 7:30 PM HT. Seattle Pacific improves to 1-0.
