CUH WVB: Swords Fall in Tough Battle with NDNU in Five Sets

Powell leads Chaminade with 19 kills

HONOLULU, HI- The Swords dropped a tough match tonight to NDNU in five sets in front of a raucous crowd at McCabe Gym.  Taking on the Argos in the conference home opener, the Swords lost to the Argos 25-16, 25-18, 9-25, 20-25 and 13-15.
 
Sophomores Crystal Powell (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) and Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) led the Swords with nineteen and eleven kills respectively.  Chaminade took the first two sets in impressive fashion, with Powell contributing 10 kills on a .474 hitting percentage in those two sets. 
 
Notre Dame de Namur roared back in the third set, hitting .481 and winning the set 25-9.  The Argos carried that momentum to the fourth and fifth sets for their first victory of the season. 
 
Senior setter Kristina Donathan (Honolulu, HI/St. Andrew's Priory) contributed 46 assists and 8 digs for Chaminade, while senior Kristy Inamasu (Kahului, HI/Maui) added 13 digs.
 
Senior Poerava Gantt (Kapaa, HI/ Kapaa) had a double-double for Chaminade, adding 11 kills and 17 digs.
 
Coach Brown added post-match: “This was a lesson learned for the team.  We can't take things for granted.  Just because we were up two sets to none, it doesn't mean the match is over.  We need to take that away from tonight.”  
 
The Swords had 60 digs while NDNU had 62.  CUH hit .246 on the match, while NDNU hit .294. 
 
NDNU was led by Jennifer Jasper with 35 kills on a .439 hitting percentage. 
 
The Swords fall to 1-9 with the loss. The Argonauts improve to 1-11.  Chaminade is back in action on September 24th at home vs. NDNU. First serve is set for 7:00 PM HT.
